"Dark Shell" offers an alternate history version in which the occupying forces that occupied Japan after World War II failed to establish firm authority, and in the resulting chaos a host of factions emerged claiming supremacy over the country, leading to unheard of bloody internecine strife.
A small group of soldiers from one of the warring sides, breaking away from the main forces and wandering through the desolate devastated countryside, stumbles upon several young women refugees and takes them under their protection. It is clear that the soldiers are motivated not by humanism but by the most carnal of motives. All the usual moral standards have been shattered in the flames of war, and in front of the eyes of the young Moƫ, the youngest of the refugees, ugly and disgusting scenes are played out. The women try at any cost to protect the little girl, who has already suffered violence in the past and whose mind has become slightly clouded by it, from the soldiers who have lost her human face.
Events take an abrupt turn when an enemy sniper shows up in the area, keeping up with the group and slowly but surely stabbing both rapists and their victims. In "Ten Negroes" style, death catches up with one hero after another. And when the last survivor, Moe, comes face to face with the sniper in the final scene, she is greeted with an unexpected revelation...
